The Weakness of Strength
Project Type
sonnet
Date
1/2020
Location
Idaho, USA
This sonnet explores the profound dichotomy between true strength and the weakness masked by violence. When the weak resort to aggression, they reveal more about their own insecurity than their power. True strength does not need to be displayed or cause pain; it flourishes in compassionate action, genuine love, and just action. This poem invites us to reflect on the trap of cruelty and how those who use it are prisoners of their own weakness, while true strength resides in those who cultivate compassion and wisdom.
In the shadow that hides vile weakness,
The weak wear the mask of pain,
For they believe that in this way they will rise with courage,
While their soul cries out in sorrow.
He who hurts another, with crude cunning,
Reveals himself to be the weakest oppressor,
He lacks power and warmth,
For in violence he finds vileness.
The strong have no need of aggression,
His strength is born of compassion,
From just action, from true love.
The weak, who feels strong in pain,
Finds only cruel support,
In the shadows he reveals himself as a prisoner.
