My Poetic Mission: Recovering the Lost Pieces

Project Type

Sonnet

Date

8/2024

Location

Idaho, USA

Since my birth in Waku Kungo, my life has been a journey marked by challenges, discoveries and transformations. Angola, with its rich soil and vibrant culture, was the cradle that gave me deep roots, even as the winds of war blew with intensity. Along the way, I carried with me fragmented memories, like leaves in the wind, waiting for the moment to be gathered and transformed into something greater. Through poetry, I seek to recover these pieces, give them new life and reconstruct the history that, although marked by loss, is full of resilience and hope. This is my mission: to sing of what was left behind, in the hope that, in doing so, I can find what was always inside me.

In the fields of Angola, the sound of the wind cries out,
Memories scattered by time wandering,
From Waku Kungo, where the sun comes to shine,
Bringing in its womb the pain that cannot be called.

The distant voices of an inflamed time,
Lost in the mist, try to find each other,
In the pages of life, where the gaze, when searching,
Finds the pieces that destiny weaves.

My heart, longing for the land,
Collects in verses, with affection and emotion,
The roots of a home that I never forgot.

And so, the mission of my poetry,
Is to unite the fragments that life broke,
To rebirth in words what I have always lived.

Through this sonnet, I seek not only to rescue the memories of a life marked by migration and separation from my homeland, but also to honor the experiences that shaped my identity. Poetry is the thread that connects the past to the present, allowing the stories of Angola and my own to be told again, in each verse. Thus, I renew my commitment to move forward, always in search of the pieces that make me whole.
