Introduction

Old sayings are repositories of folk wisdom, echoing lessons that stand the test of time. Inspired by my grandfather Rocha's old saying, "In a house where there is no bread, everyone screams and no one is right," the following sonnets explore the hunger, discord, and melancholy that arise when basic needs fail.

Sonnet I - "Voices in Hunger"

In the golden age when the wise grandfather sang,
When bread was lacking in the house and pain arose,
Everyone screamed, each voice rose,
In a sad echo, a shadow that remained.

In the unlit fireplace, pain entered,
And each look of hope faded,
In the plots of that hunger that bit,
Without reason returning to the home.

Thus said the old man in his prime,
That where hunger reigns, there is only pain,
And the bonds are untied in bitterness.

May the lesson of need guide us,
And when sharing the bread, the voice that deceives,
Give us peace in the safest way.

Sonnet II - "Flames of Hunger"

From the lack of bread, the home burns in longing,
Each scream, a thunder that invades peace,
No one hears, only tears and clamor,
In the cold echo, only longing remains.

In the crumbs that the table does not contain,
Reason loses its way, is consumed,
And the hunger that remains in the soul,
Makes each word a sad name.

Hunger that cuts and makes pain its art,
On empty plates leaves only truth,
That tears the chest and leaves hope.

From the memories of the grandfather, we draw age,
That in a slow fire, the pain is made in part,
And the lesson of suffering turns into longing.

Conclusion

The sonnets presented reflect the wise words of my grandfather Rocha, who knew that the lack of essential resources is fertile ground for discord and suffering. May we learn from these reflections and value the importance of unity and compassion, even in times of scarcity, because it is in harmony that we find true reason.
