Generation of Empty Smiles

Project Type

Sonnet

Date

10/2024

Location

Idaho, USA

This sonnet captures the irony of the digital age, where a generation marked by sadness finds itself trapped in a cycle of sharing happy images and fake smiles. The incessant search for acceptance on social media hides the depth of true emotions, while filters and poses replace human touch and sincere affection. The poem invites us to reflect on the disconnect between internal reality and the projected image, revealing the emptiness behind digital illusions.

In fake smiles, life hides,
Empty hearts, but the lens responds,
Photos so beautiful, yet so fake,
Joy in pixels, in wounded souls.

Each click hides the contained tear,
On the networks, illusions that the world mirrors,
But the heart knows the truth that seals,
We are sad, in a fake joy.

But where are the real smiles?
The sincere words, the friendly touch?
We lose ourselves in fleeting filters.

Between flashes and poses, an ancient void,
We search in vain for the first ones on the screen,
And we forget the shelter of affection.
