In the soft light of a golden evening, in an office filled with old books and vivid memories, I sit at the age of 65. My gray hair and well-trimmed beard reflect not only the passage of time, but also the wisdom accumulated over a life rich in experiences. With a pen in hand, I write fervently in a large open book, delving into the depths of my memories and emotions.

I, João Elmiro da Rocha Chaves, or simply John, was born in Angola, in a time of great change and turmoil. My childhood was marked by the intense experiences of the country's struggle for independence, a period that shaped my character and resilience. As a young student at the Narciso do Espírito Santo Industrial and Commercial School in Santa Comba, Cela, Angola, I experienced the cultural and social effervescence of that time. It was there, with my classmates and under the guidance of Professor Manuel Bento, that I participated in the play "The Trial of Jesus." The intensity of emotions while playing John the Baptist and the warm response from the audience still warm my heart to this day.

As the years passed, life took me to new lands. After Angola’s independence, I was evacuated to Portugal and later found a new home in the United States. In Santa Clara, California, I continued my studies and graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University. My career in electronic engineering flourished, especially during the 14.5 years I worked at ROLM, where I absorbed a unique corporate culture that valued employee well-being and continuous innovation.

I then settled at Micron Technology, where my nearly 15-year journey was marked by significant achievements. I excelled as a Senior Member of Technical Staff, leading projects in systems architecture and hardware design. I expanded my hardware design team and implemented innovative processes that transformed the way the company operated. My expertise ranges from signal and power integrity to environmental compliance, reflecting my commitment to excellence and sustainability.

However, my life is defined by more than just professional achievements. I am a man of many facets, with a deep connection to my cultural roots. A descendant of Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, known as Magriço, and Vasco Gil Sodré, I value my Portuguese heritage. My passion for literature and poetry, especially sonnets in the style of Luís de Camões, reveals an intellectual and sensitive side that complements my analytical and structured mind.

I am also an avid admirer of the Holy Spirit festivals, traditions that I have embraced both in Angola and in the Portuguese communities of California and Idaho. These celebrations are more than mere events; they are manifestations of my cultural identity and connection to the community.

In a more recent chapter of my life, I witnessed my son, Michael, follow the path of innovation by presenting his thesis on the use of AI for immersive experiences at the XR Access Symposium at Cornell Tech in New York. I felt deeply proud to see him explore new technological frontiers, reflecting the same pioneering spirit that has marked my own career.

As I write my book, surrounded by echoes of the past and aspirations for the future, I reflect on my journey. Each line written is a testament to a life lived with passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. My story is a rich and vibrant tapestry woven with threads of courage, love, and wisdom.

Through my words and actions, I continue to inspire those around me, leaving a legacy that transcends time and borders. In the lines of my book, I find not only a way to express my soul, but also a means to connect with the world, sharing the beauty and complexity of my journey with future generations.

This account captures the essence of my life and passions, revealing a man whose story is as rich and multifaceted as the pages he writes.
