Sanctus Franciscus, humilis pastor et defensor pauperum, vitam egit exemplari caritatis et misericordiae. Nunc ascendit ad caelum, relinquens terrena concilia in lacrimis spei et pacis. Convenimus hodie ad memoriam eius laudandum et donum eius in cordibus nostris aeterne retinendum.

Magno nostri dum cecidit pontifex orbi,

Iustitiae princeps, humilis, plenusque virtus,

In corde mundi resonans suavisque virtus,

Et lacrimas fovit, flammisque fulget orbi.

Summi vates sermo, humani voces honor,

Ad caelum inflat animas, pectusque movit,

In omne lumen caritas ejus movit,

Et gloria manet, sensusque manet honor.

In foro cecidit vox sanctae memoriae,

Laudatio pia resonat, clara oratio,

Fluit fida gentis amoris caritatis;

Saint Francis, humble shepherd and defender of the poor, lived a life exemplary of charity and mercy. Now he ascends to heaven, leaving earthly councils behind in tears of hope and peace. We gather today to praise his memory and to hold his gift eternally in our hearts.

Sonnet

While to our world descended the great pontiff,

Prince of justice, humble and full of virtue,

In the heart of the world his gentle virtue rang true,

And he nourished our tears, and in flames the globe he lit.

The supreme seer’s speech, honor of human voices,

He breathes souls to heaven and stirs the grieving breast,

Through every beam his charity willed the blessed quest,

And glory endures, as feeling and honor rejoices.

In the forum there fell the voice of holy memory,

A pious eulogy resounds, a clear invocation,

Faith flows forth in the people’s love and charity;
